Orion (SB1)

Welcome Back!

Our first term back with the children has been wonderful, we have had lots of fun learning and have worked together to adapt to the new changes within school. We would like to say a huge well done to all of the children and a further thank you to all of our families.

South Bank High 5

At the beginning of the Autumn term we read the story ‘Worrysaurus’ as we know children can experience feelings of worry and uncertainty, especially with the current circumstances. We based our focus on feeling safe and being kind to ourselves and others. Each child named things that make them feel happy and safe, we created magic worry pebbles just like the Worrysaurus and discussed who we can share our worries with. It was lovely to hear the children share ideas that make them feel safe such as mum’s, dad’s, grandparents, siblings, toys, stories, lights on at night and special teddies. As a class we shared our values and designed our own set of rules that link to our school High 5, the children had thoughtful and meaningful ideas such as “kind words, play with someone if their lonely, no hurting, gentle hands”. Teachers and children refer to the South Bank High 5 throughout the day.

Autumn 1

This term we stepped back in time (approximately 65 million years) to revisit the age of the DINOSAURS! We linked this theme across all curriculum subjects and the children became quite the scientists. Some of the exciting things we have done are

· Measured Dino foot prints
· Directed Dinosaurs to their caves using beebots
· Researched and compared dinosaurs based on their features and diet and linked this to animal classification.
· Sang dino-songs (see below for the lyrics to practise at home)
·  Explored fossils
We even had a Tyrannosaurus Rex visit our class! He delivered his favourite story ‘Tyrannosaurus Drip’ for us to share and read together.


Daniel, well done for settling in so well this term, you have blown us away with your curiosity and love of learning.
Connor, well done for settling in so well this term, your big smile and give it a go attitude has made us all smile this term.
Grace, well done for working hard in all of your lessons Grace, it is lovely to see you proud of the work you produce.
Jayden, well done for settling in to SB1 Jayden, we love your enthusiasm and team player attitude in P.E and outdoor activity sessions.
Oscar, well done for your hard work this term Oscar, we have noticed a big improvement to your phonics and handwriting.
Bentley, well done for your hard work and effort this term Bentley, you are always eager to learn and be a good role model to others.
Masa, well done Masa, you have grew in confidence a lot this term, we love your curiosity and creative ideas.
Oliver, well done for this term Oliver, we love your excitement and wonderful imagination.
Jack, well done for this term Jack, we have loved your scientific interest and dinosaur knowledge.
Lewis, well done for this term Lewis, it is wonderful to see how proud of your work you are.
Jacob, well done for this term Jacob, you shared some great and creative game ideas.


· At home please encourage independence as much as possible—dressing/ fastening coat/ shoelaces
· Listen to your child read daily at home
· Send your child in their PE kit every Friday (outdoor clothes and footwear)
· Due to COVID we are no longer communicating via home school books however each Monday we will send individual slips for you to send in with your child with any info or messages.

Activities to help develop writing skills...

•Ask your child to help write lists, messages, menu's, cards etc. and let them observe you when you write.
•Writing in sand with a finger, e.g. their name, patterns from
left to right, letter shapes.
•Painting letter shapes with water and brushes on an outside
•Allowing your child to paint, draw and chalk.
•Threading beads/ pasta.
•Playing with construction toys.
•Write notes to family and friends.
•Encourage your child to use malleable materials.
•Encourage the use of scissors, cutting out a range of things
•Encourage large motor skills movements e.g. air writing,
painting with brushes and water.
