Welcome to Year 1

This is the Year 1 page, please find the all the relevant information below.

Curriculum

The topic for the Autumn Term is JOURNEYS.

We will be following in the footsteps of Captain James Cook and his voyages of exploration into the unknown world. We will also look at  Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart.  We will learn to draw maps and give directions for different journeys.

We are settling in to our new class nicely and are learning through play in our classroom areas.

The topic for the Spring Term is LONDON

During the spring term we are going to find out about who was responsible for the Great fire of London and the plague. The children will research the famous landmarks and look at the differences between modern day London and the city in the past.

The topic for the Summer Term is 'HOW WE USED TO LIVE'.

Do you know what South Bank was like when your grandparents were children? How life at school has changed? We will have the opportunity to find out what life used to be like at home and at school for children. We will be trying on old-fashioned clothes and tasting different foods from the past.

Home Learning

Reading

Please make sure your child brings their book bag, reading book and reading record everyday. Your child will be able to change their reading book on a morning. Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

Each time children read at home they will get a reading raffle ticket. The raffle is drawn weekly so the more you read the more chance you have to win a prize!

Homework

Homework is given out every Friday.

Please return to school by the following Thursday.

These are the spellings (first three pages) children in Year 1 need to know by the end of the year. Please support your child to practise spelling the words your child brings home.
