Guided Reading

Reading is a key life skill and one that South Bank holds as a highest priority. To this end, daily Guided Reading session take place in order for pupils to reach the appropriate level of fluency and independence in their reading.  This approach is particularly prevalent in Reception and Key Stage One. We follow a guided reading policy which allows pupils to read as part of a group as well as individually to staff. They discuss the content of the book and answer questions to establish their understanding of what they are reading. The children access a wide range of texts which are banded and levelled within a progressive system.

Reading Comprehension

Following on from pupils developing their independent reading skills, it is vital that children understand what they are reading. In Key Stage One, but more so as they move into Key Stage Two significant importance is placed on developing pupils comprehension skills. As part of each English block of work, pupils read appropriate texts and focus on answering a range of questions which help deepen their understanding of what they are reading, developing them both as readers and writers. This is done both as a class and independently so that teachers can assess pupils ability to comprehend.
