Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural and British Values British Values At South Bank Primary, British values have always been interwoven within the values and ethos of the school. They underpin the curriculum entitlement our children receive and influence the relationships that we have with each other. Democracy Democracy is embeded at the school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council and regular questionnaires. The elections of the School Council and Eco committee members are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action. The Rule of Law The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced. Our school has “The South Bank High 5” which are deeply embeded in our work every day. We have playground rules to ensure safety and fair play which are agreed by the children. Each class also discusses and sets its own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment. Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Individual Liberty Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make good choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, while understanding their responsibility to each other, They are advised how to exercise these safely; examples of this can be clearly seen in our e-safety and P.S.H.E. lessons. Whether it is through choice of challenge; of how they record; of participation in our numerous extra- curricular activities; our pupils are given the freedom to make choices. Mutual Respect: Respect is one of the core values of our school .It is deeply embeded in all that we do at the school. The pupils know and understand that it is expected and imperative that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have and to everything, however big or small. The core value of Respect at South Bank Primary School underpins our work every day both in and out of the classroom. Tolerance of Those With Different Faiths And Beliefs Our core value of Respect ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and belief. South Bank Primary School is a diverse school and enhances pupils understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies and P.S.H.E. work. Beliefs, traditions and customs from other faiths and countries are celebrated, with visitors being invited in to our school to enrich and extend understanding. Through this our pupils gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. SMSC SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. At South Bank, we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides children with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. SMSC is embeded throughout our school community ranging from RE (Religious Education) and SEAL (Spiritual and Emotional aspects of Learning) lessons through to assemblies, charity work, cultural awareness events, visiting speakers and a wide range of extra-curricular and out of school activities. The school ethos “Moving potential to new horizons” is also a significant contributor to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils. The ethos is embeded strongly throughout all teaching of the National Curriculum subjects and lessons aim to include clear SMSC opportunities.
